Ban on International Flights to Continue in Thailand

The Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT) yesterday announced to extend the ban on all inbound international passenger flights in the country for another month from May 1 to May 31. The extension came as a temporary measure, in order to curb the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic through air travel to the country.

As of Tuesday, April 28, Thailand has reported about 2,938 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 54 patients have lost their lives because of this virus. However, around 2,652 patients have completely recovered.

Mr. Chula Sukmanop, the CAAT director-general, said “Exempted from the ban are state and military aircraft; aircraft requiring emergency and technical landing without disembarkation; humanitarian aid, medical relief flights and repatriation and cargo aircraft.”

He also said that all passengers will be subjected to disease control measures including 14 day quarantine and other relevant measures which are issued under the executive decree on public administration in an emergency situation.

In case of domestic passenger flights, Thai Air Asia and Thai Lion Air are ready to resume their flight operations from May 1 on some limited routes. Bangkok Airways also expected to start some of its domestic flights from May 15. However, all passengers will be asked to wear face masks on board the plane, food and beverages will not be served during the flight and seating arrangements will be set by leaving empty seats to create safe distance for passengers as according to the requirements set by the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand.

Moreover, the government of Thailand will consider to extending a state of emergency over the COVID-19 pandemic until the end of May, but will consider easing some restrictions on businesses and public activities.

The government’s Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) has recommended extension of emergency powers and a nationwide night-time curfew for another month. It has also recommended continuing restrictions on travel between provinces and large scale public gatherings, extend a work from home policy and delay four public holidays in May.
